July 4 marks the return of Richbrau Brewing, a historic name in the Richmond beer scene.
Richbrau originally opened in Shockoe Bottom in 1993 and ran for years before eventually closing its doors. Now, the Richbrau brand is back.
The name is the same, but the product isn’t directly connected to the previous brand.
“Richbrau is a brand that has deep roots in our city’s brewing history, and deserves to be part of the world-class craft beer scene being built here,” Matthew Mullett, Richbrau owner, said.
Drawing on the Richmond history theme, the brewery’s first four canned beers are all named for interesting facts from the city.
For example, there’s a sour ale named after a street gang and an IPA named in honor of a famous psychic horse. It doesn’t get more Richmond than that.
“We want Richbrau to be a brewery that could only exist here in Richmond,” head brewer Brian McCauley said. “Naming the beer after pieces of Richmond’s history, and telling the stories that go along with them, is just one of the ways for us to connect Richbrau to the city.”
Richbrau is also offering membership to The Conspiracy, an exclusive society for adventurous beer lovers. The membership is limited to 50 and offers perks such as merchandise and exclusive access to tours and events.
